1. When coaches may contact you

You may email any coach at any time, in any division. The rule limits what they may send back: in football, Division I coaches may begin contacting recruits September 1 of junior year (this sport differs from the June 15 default); Division II on June 15 after sophomore year; Division III at any time.

General NCAA rule, verified 2026-09-16; dead and quiet periods within the year are on the NCAA's own recruiting calendar for the sport. Before the date, a coach can reply only with generic camp and questionnaire material — so an early email is still worth sending: it puts you on the list they open on day one.

2. The roster cap of 105

Since July 2025 there is no scholarship limit in Division I football — instead every program that opted into the House settlement may carry at most 105 players, and any of them may be on scholarship.

What it means for you: a program listed as "over the cap" is shrinking toward 105 — fewer spots for the next classes and, often, fewer walk-ons. Every program page and the roster-room ranking show the number. The rules in detail.

3. Your odds, honestly

Participation figures for this sport are not in the high-school survey.

4. NCAA eligibility

Division I and II require registration with the NCAA Eligibility Center, 16 core courses and a core-course GPA of at least 2.3 (D-I) or 2.2 (D-II). No SAT/ACT is required for eligibility since 2023, though schools may want scores for admission. Division III has no NCAA academic standard.

  1. Register with the NCAA Eligibility Center Create a Certification Account (D-I / D-II) at eligibilitycenter.org; a Profile Page is enough for D-III. Use the same email you give coaches.
  2. 16 NCAA-approved core courses Only courses on your high school's NCAA List of Approved Core Courses count.
  3. 4 years of English Core English courses.
  4. 3 years of math (Algebra I or higher) Algebra I and above; pre-algebra does not count.
  5. 2 years of natural or physical science Including one lab science if your school offers it.
  6. 1 extra year of English, math or science
  7. 2 years of social science
  8. 4 additional core courses From any core area, or foreign language, comparative religion or philosophy.

5. What a first email should carry

Subject

Grad year, position, club or high school, and one number a coach cares about: "2028 GK · Rush SC 09 Elite · 3.9 GPA · film".

Body, five lines

  1. Who you are: name, grad year, position, height, school and club, hometown.
  2. Why this program: something true from its page — the conference, a coach's background, the major you want.
  3. Your film link and a transcript or GPA and test scores.
  4. When you play next: tournaments, showcases, camps — dates and jersey number.
  5. A question that invites a reply, and your phone number.

What not to do

  • Mass-mail forty coaches with the same paragraph; coaches compare notes.
  • Let a parent write it. Coaches can tell, and they are recruiting the player.
  • Attach large video files; link to Hudl or YouTube.
  • Send before you have film. One email with film beats three without.

Follow up

No reply in ten days is normal before the contact date. Follow up with something new — a result, new film, a camp you registered for — never "just checking in".
