How to read the numbers
These pages have one reader in mind: a high-school athlete deciding where to play. Every figure comes from public data, refreshed once a year. Nothing is estimated, and nothing comes from a school's marketing.
How to read the numbers
- Percentiles compare a program with every program in the same sport and division (or a school with every school in its division). "88th percentile for budget" means the program outspends 88% of its peers.
- Spend per roster spot is team expenses divided by roster size, both for the same season.
- Roster room is the Division I cap minus last season's roster. Last season's rosters predate the caps, so many read "over"; players already on a roster may stay.
- Net price is what aided first-year students paid after grants, on average; athletic aid is separate and on top.
- Campus safety rates are reported offences per 1,000 students per year, averaged over three years. Reports are not convictions, and campuses with strong reporting can show higher counts.
- Odds divide high-school participants by NCAA roster spots. Both cover four classes.
Figures lag a season: a page in autumn shows the season and survey year most recently published.
